Week 10

Week 10

This week, I learned how important a role that communication has. It is so common to see conflicts from miscommunication in many groups including family. Fortunately, my parents didn't really argue that much which I am very grateful for. I was thinking about why my parents didn't really have conflicts, and I found it. Personally, my mom is very humble. She listens really well. She avoids arguing. I mean she does, but she knows where to stop. My dad is really diligent. He cleans our home in the morning every day. Basically, they work together to have a healthy family relationship. They talk a lot about everything. When communication is common in the family, I often see that the family has a good relationship.  I am very thankful for their example. Also, I am glad that I have noticed the reasons.

I was reading through the PowerPoint, I saw that listening is really important in communication. If they both don't listen to each other, that communication wouldn't go anywhere. It might cause more conflicts. In this case, it is better to not have communication than have it. If you have a conversation to solve the problems, listening shows that how much will you have to change to solve the problems. I would love to talk, so it is kind of hard to just listen to others, I guess I should work on listening.

I really liked  a quote at the begging of the reading assignment from President Ezra Taft Benson, he said:
"Your most important friendships should be with your own brothers and sisters and with your father and mother. Love your family. Be loyal to them. Have a genuine concern for your brothers and sisters. Help carry their load so you can say, like the lyrics of the song, 'He ain't heavy; he's my brother."
I know that this is really important. Family should have the best friendship. They should know all the secrets in the family. However, it is so hard to let the family know. At least for me, it is. I think I am pretty close to my parents and sisters, but it is still hard to tell everything. I guess I need to work on trusting my family more. I am grateful for my family, and I love them.

I read a talk from Elder Ballard. He talked about the council. He gave five suggestions to make the council better and to be effective.

1. Focus on the fundamental
2. Focus on people
3. Promote free and open expression
4. participation is a privilege
5. Lead with love

I often see that when people were having the council, it goes a different path than where I should be. I think it was just because they didn't really focus on the fundamentals. I really liked the third one. It is really important and it goes along with the fourth. The council happens because they want to know how to help others or how to solve the problems. If someone doesn't express their feeling, it makes the council useless. Elder Ballard said that everyone in the council is important. They have to respect each other. The leader of the council should make everyone feel comfortable to say their honest expression. No one deserved to be ignored. The council members, they should bring ideas or thoughts to the meeting, so they can participate. In order to do everything from the first through fourth, they have to have love. If love doesn't exist in the meeting, it would cause more problems, or they just can't solve the conflicts. When everyone applies those five principles to the council, the council will be the best way to have healthy communication with family and friends.
